Eco-Printing and Natural Dyes by Amy Gilbert

Welcome to Foraged and Found

A place where nature, textiles and sustainability collide.

Based on the Kapiti Coast of New Zealand, Amy specialises in bringing you a range of naturally dyed and botanically printed goods for your home and for the whole family.

Choose from a selection of products, some pre-loved, some new and some handmade – all using natural fibres and natural dyes.

Everything created or up-cycled has been brought to life using the colours, pigments and forms found in nature.

From high quality one-of-a-kind women’s clothing and accessories, to homewares, to Steiner-inspired toys such as play silks, felt creatures and dolls – we hope you can find something you’d love to make your own, just as much as Amy has loved making it for you.

What is Eco Printing?

Eco-printing, also known as eco-dyeing is a method which draws the pigment directly from the plants, onto the fabric. The plants are carefully selected for their print-making abilities and levels of tannins present.

No toxic chemicals are used, simply heat, pressure and plants, with the small addition of some natural mineral or metal salts which aid the process of extraction and permanency on the textile.

All of the plants used for Foraged and Found’s eco-printing are locally foraged, and fallen foliage is used whenever possible. The fabric is pre-treated (to ensure the longevity of the prints), before bundling together with the foliage and steaming.

During the steaming process, the magic is released – no two pieces are the same. Often results can be quite unexpected – and quite wonderful.

It is always a joy to uncover the magic which each leaf holds.

About our Natural Dyes

At Foraged and Found, a wide range of natural dyes are used. Some are locally foraged, some of these dyes come from kitchen waste, and some are outsourced. All of them come from our Earth.

Amy takes great care to always ensure that these naturally dyed textiles are properly pre-treated to ensure that they will be colour-fast, and with the correct care you can enjoy their beautiful shades for many years to come.
